Abstract

The present study wants to examine the relationships between some innovation-related concepts (innovation capability, contextual factors, and business environment) and innovation process. Innovation process is important because it significantly supports product innovation which in turn increases small and medium enterprise (SME) financial performance. It includes improvements in operational and managerial aspects which are sometimes neglected by business organization compared to product innovation.  The context of travel agent SMEs is used in this study because their characteristics require innovation process. The present study uses quantitative approach in which the data were collected from 138 SME owners of travel agents in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis by SPSS. It was found that innovation capability, contextual factors, and business environment are significantly related to innovation process. These findings can provide some important implications for SMEs in this industry.
